I wouldn't compare the two. Compare the success of the Turksih Republic with the relative failure of Iran under the Shah. Were the personalities of the two men reversed, perhaps the conditions of the two nations today would be reversed, but that is not the case.
It'll be interesting to see if the right person steps up to lead Iran after the inevitable collapse of the current corrupt theocracy.
