I would argue that the biggest mistake of the communist movement was its willingness, even eagerness, to enforce the Revolution upon people who didn't particularly want it. It gave a license to every power-hungry psychopath to kill wantonly while clutching the red flag.
I also think that the label of "communist" and "socialist" is used to describe far too many people and movements. Reminds me of Umberto Eco's discussion of the heretical movements in The Name of the Rose.
Humanity ought to be the first order of interest for humans.
