The interest lies in how wantonly gleeful Europeans become when discussing American demise. They have never liked Americans as a standard response and it has been that way since Samuel Johnson.

For reddit, this topic is like catnip, but then again the majority of Reddit's audience is post-national spoiled children who confuse excrement for excitement. And this can be seen in the very thread you posted where the majority of comments could be summarized with into a digestible byte like so: "Amerika Suxxxs Dudes."

I think ordinary Europeans are more concerned about their own screwed up collapse to worry about the USA. Anybody who thinks that the US political system is the most corrupt in the world has led a very sheltered life.

"Collapse" is bombastic, but the US is exacerbating its economic troubles with its petty political culture. If e.g. Europeans are pointing this out its probably because they've seen it happen before/right now in several EU countries, notably Greece and Italy.

It's not that we don't like Americans, it's rather that we don't like American policies. Most countries think that defending themselves against foreign threats means acting when such threats are becoming evident. The US seems to think that any possible threat, which may or may not be true, entitles Americans to attack the possible, often imaginary, enemy. It also entitles them to spy on its own citizens denying them basic civil rights. To some of us in Europe American policies sometimes seem to be a sort of nazism with human face... I doubt the American Revolution was made with this in mind. I lately reread your Declaration of Independence, and found it one of the most inspiring, well written, political statement ever. Maybe you should reread it too...
