Now I'm far from home
Spending time alone
It's time to set my demons free
Been put to the test
My mind laid to rest
I'm on a psycho holiday

Sailing back home from Vancouver yesterday, I thought of this:

Blow, Boreas, blow (from Sir Barnaby Whigg, or No Wit like a Woman’s) – Henry Purcell (1659-1695) ; Rogers Covey-Crump, tenor ; Academy of Ancient Music directed by Christopher Hogwood

I sure do appreciate the way someone has uploaded so much Purcell, including the words and the score.

Purcell wrote a lot of incidental music for the theatre. Most of the plays are eminently forgettable, but the music is always excellent:

There’s nothing so fatal as woman (from A Fool’s Preferment, or the Three Dukes of Dunstable) – Henry Purcell (1659-1695) ; Roger Covey-Crump, tenor ; Academy of Ancient Music directed by Christopher Hogwood

Now for something a little different.

Isaan (Thai country) rock performed by city people.

Great to start off elliptical workouts... ;)

A modern composition true to the Juré gospel style native to the Creoles of SW Louisiana. The original folk music is almost entirely lost and was sung in community rather than as a performance but this is pretty accurate in melodic construction.
10 years ago the USA had Steve Jobs, Bob Hope, and Johnny Cash. Now we have no Jobs, no Hope, and no Cash.

The beauty and heart a symphonic orchestra is capable of (trust me, it is worth listening to both parts of the entire movement):

Mahler: Symphony No. 5: Part III: Mov. 4 - Part 1 and 2

ansuchin,

I have a confession to make. I find Mahler to be unbearably depressing. Since you linked to him, someday when I'm particularly feeling manic, I'll have another listen.

Baïlero (from Chants d'Auvergne) - Marie-Joseph Canteloube (1879-1957) ; Véronique Gens, soprano ; Orchestre National de Lille directed by Jean Claude Casadesus

Lou coucut (from Chants d'Auvergne) - Marie-Joseph Canteloube (1879-1957) ; Kiri Te Kanawa, soprano ; Royal Philharmonic directed by Carl Davis

I bought me a cat (from Old American Songs) – Aaron Copland (1900-1990) ; Earl Hazell, bass ; Alexis Davis Hazell, piano

Another song from the collection, this one from a live performance at the Auditorium du Louvre in Paris last year:

Ching-a-ring chaw (from Old American Songs) – Aaron Copland (1900-1990) ; Damien Pass, bass-baritone ; Chloé Ghisalberti, piano

I think these are actually better done with full orchestra, and even with his German accent, I think Thomas Quasthoff does a better job of this:

I bought me a cat (from Old American Songs) – Aaron Copland (1900-1990) ; Thomas Quasthoff, bass ; Berliner Philharmoniker directed by Simon Rattle

Nice to see American music getting some respect.

Never criticize anyone until you've walked several kilometres in their shoes.
Because

1. You're now several kilometres away; and

2. You've got their shoes.
