We have in Portugal two German firms - Volkswagen and Continental (tyre factory) -, which are among the most productive of their respective groups. Which means that when people invest in state of the art technology and equipment we can be as competitive or more than any other European country. Our work force has on average 9 years schooling, while northern Europeans have 12, but that difference is no longer significant. That's why I say that we don't want bailouts, we need investment. But what Germany is imposing on us is a shortage of investment money, in order to save their banks.

Things folks misunderstand is :

What is wealth ? ?

what constitutes, in modern age of today , wealth for a nation's economy and people

What makes a nation, Germany, Switzerland and and wealthy

Few people understand that

In modern age of today, technology, PATENT , is wealth

not vast land (conquering land in history) ..
not natural resources ( Oil, copper, etc) ..
but
PATENT (know how, how to do things) is real wealth of an economy of a nation

Back in 1920's , Nitrate, basic material for fertilizer and explosives, came only from bird droppings .. in Chile ..

Germany, to feed their people needed fertilizer .. and to fuck the Brits they needed Explosives

But

Brits were controlling the "Chile saltpeter or Peru saltpeter" supply .. denying access to Germans

So

Haber and Bosch, two German chemist .. took Nitrogen from air AND Hydrogen from Water .. synthesized Ammonia .. NH3

That is what is meant by Patent and technology = Wealth

If you find a silver bullet, a pill, that would kill brain tumor cells .. and patent it .. that is wealth

otherwise

Gold is a metal, in reality worthless (not much industrial use), and lots of Real Estate in India and China and Bangladesh

Meaning , as said, real wealth of an economy, are the patents that economy holds .. ask the Swiss & Germans (they the real wealthy)

Capital has no fatherland. A productive people will always benefit from its productivity, no matter who owns the capital. We, in Portugal, do not have to invent niches to have a comfortable life. We just have to be at least as good as our competitors.

All I can say with certainty is that the majority of heavy manufacturing equipment I see imported to China from Europe is German, and all of the specialist crews that do the installation and wiring are either German or a few Swedes. Admittedly this is one specialized manufacturing field, but the attitude in Guangdong is that only German kit is worth buying, and only German workers are worth contracting. They appear to be the only country with international respect in manufacturing circles.
