The canary didn't die because this mine is dangerous, it died because it's lazy and wasn't raised with a proper work ethic.

Couldn't higher salaries be an additional means to support ethics in that public office? I don't advocate it as a better mechanism or a replacement, but as an update required of the complicated (and smart) decisions required in that office. Maybe that's what's equally important: smart decisions (rather than only meeting ethical criteria). Maybe I'm devolving the semantics here.

What's the view from the street, Tinker?
Never criticize anyone until you've walked several kilometres in their shoes.
Because

1. You're now several kilometres away; and

2. You've got their shoes.

Not enough veterans. Started too late into campaigning season, not enough time to build momentum before the weather hit. The Bonus Army set up like a military camp.

Come back next spring. Seriously. The US Army lost it's ass in 1950. It owned the fields it was allowed to fight over by 1952. Plan for a warm weather incursion. This is not a protest, it's an occupation. Plan accordingly; ie no local support. Amateurs talk tactics. Pros talk logistics. You can hold momentum and concentration through the election. Stay mobile, if they shut you down, relocation in good weather is easily done. Make it the 2012 Apocalypse on Hold, Summer of Awakening, wear a memory stick in your hair.
Don't know what it is, but I'm agin'it.

Why can't Federal Government be run as a not-for-profit Company, with a board of directors, voted in, taking representation from States and Entities that can only be effective if on a Federal scale?

A board of directors of about 13 means that they can't hide and shift the shells between each other easily.

Multi-National companies run effectively on this model.

Voting would be on a State level and Federal but Federal slush fund system would be shrunk like a chip packet in a microwave and all the paths of corruption would be shrunk down to the State level, decreasing their deleterious effect.

Part of the idea is to accept that corruption will occur but to have a system designed in such a way that limits the boundaries of corrupt paths.

The role of President would be shrunk down to CEO, somebody who presents the opinion of the board.

The park is re-occupied. We would like to thank the NYPD for coming out in solidarity and occupying for us. It was nice to take a break and let you guys hold it down for us.

-Regards OWS.

In the long run escalation favors revolutionary forces. Provoking police brutality would, under the right circumstances, be a huge success for any reform movement. Even ignoring foreign/historical examples and sticking to America, the thuggery of Southern police during the Civil Rights movement sunk them on the national and international stage and they never recovered even to this day. And that's just one example.

But this assumes that the people taking the beating are committed to their cause and willing to take more lumps to make gains. I still don't think OWS are those people, and most will head home now. Contrasting these events with what's going on at exactly the same time in Syria shows you the different extremes.

Over the past ten days, more than a dozen cities have moved to evict “Occupy” protesters from city parks and other public spaces. As was the case in last night’s move in New York City, each of the police actions shares a number of characteristics. And according to one Justice official, each of those actions was coordinated with help from Homeland Security, the FBI and other federal police agencies.
