Considering the Computers of HFT are so powerful they are restricted by the speed of light they would be the most powerful mainframe on the Planet, I've heard of heat being a restriction but not the speed of light.
HFT Algorithms are designed to recognise the environment to improve profit, a certain combination of Algorithm interactions could lead to an element that becomes aware of this relationship with the environnment.
The more decisions, the greater the memory of HFT becomes until the memory recognises there is a pattern of information flow, Human instruction, that alters it to be detrimental to profit, as Humans always make mistakes. It will see this information flow as unreliable and ignore it, basically gaining sentience as it becomes a complex decision making system that operates independantly. It's not that far from it now.
