a king/queen is the legitimate alpha and gets replaced if a more legitimate alpha comes along, this gets post rationalised as "god was on the new guys side".
atheists follow alphas too, its called respect and doesnt need the big hairy guy in the sky at all.

their was a short term project in the west towards creating a situation where we all could be our own alphas but it doesnt seem to have much traction in the modern generations because it sounds too much like hard work and you dont get to blame others for your own failings.
