Anti-Commerical Commercial rock

I am watching this video. Having grown up on these big rock bands that sell this anti-commercial message, I have always been struck by just how inoculated to this sort of criticism that very commercialism is. A hundred thousand 13 year old goth girls probably blasted this track in 2004 and yet it made no difference, they were still taken in by the commercialism. I can imagine the unreflecting adoration, "I wish I was pretty and famous like her!", despite the message. It just doesn't matter. It's kind of nutty.

I think in general conservatives have this message go right over their heads, for good and bad reasons. Some process the inherent contradictions immediately and move forward, some never pick them up.

I once heard Bono comment on the white whiners in rock (oh we're rich, but money is so TERRIBLE), saying he was one of them until it just became gauche. He was impressed with the black rappers who not only were ok with making money but were gosh darned excited about it.

He had a really good point but like the original white whiner he complained about was completely delusional about the fact that he had become black in his mind only. He still is white as a daisy in his mind, just doesn't know it.

I never cared about the message in 'music', anyway - I just wanted the noise. One riff, one rhythm. Rinse and repeat for about the next hour or so......
