China a democracy in a generation?

to participate in the western political system you join of the magor parties - these beasts are not usually not democratic internally and have structures and power brokers that long outlive the public representatives that come and go - they do however tend to reflect the bulk wishes of the people that participate in them.

to participate in the chinese political system you join the party and it internally has various factions of reformers and the conservatives and they represent the wishes of the people that join them.

the chinese system does not have a ruling family or elite class, people do seem to rise up through the ranks on merit and it has thrown up both progressive and conservative leaders.

so, besides the compulsory division which turns people who vote per issue into rinos and dinos - what exactly is the difference ?

their is some devil in the detail around that - elite classes spring up as quick as you kill them, they are called networks... im still of the impression that people do rise up the ranks, will have to chase up more info on that before i really defend that stance

i was being somewhat obnoxious to the question of the thread, cant help but shake the feeling their isnt as much difference as westerners claim.

if we had more grassroots democracy with more localised parties all squabbling away, and less centralised federal power, i could make a clean distinction - the current system of increasingly remote and large institutions is making the differences more and more moot to my tastes.

I would say there is a de facto elite in China, even though there is the possibility for outsiders of great talent to enter that elite from a humble background. Come to think of it, social mobility is probably about equivalent to the US.

not suitable for a nation of 1.6 Billion people and 50 ethnicity

how can democracy work ?

democracy is practicable for Switzerland or Lichtenstein

but not even for America

calling India the biggest democracy is an insult to democracy (and India)

In china , something similar to communist party elite, maybe called some different name, will exist even in 1000 yrs

Predicting a "crash" in China not exactly a brave stance. Wait long enough and they will have some kind of major market correction and this can be called a "crash." Happens to everyone eventually, it's like predicting someone will die.

Why the people most eagerly predicting a "crash" are adamant that it will also include some kind of mass slaughter escapes me.

Ibrahim: you make an interesting point. There's a big difference between liberal democracies, where minority rights are respected (such as Canada) and populist democracies, where they aren't. If China were to become the type of democracy where the Han treat everyone else like beasts of burden, it would be no Canada.
