It just seems that they are living like what is called here, "old money". Families that have had wealth for generations tend to have a similar attitude and it centers around the notion that in order to have wealth, you strive in all ways not to spend it.......

My point was that social mood determines what is considered a status symbol. What is considered status changes with the social mood.

The status conscious buyer is not buying for himself, but for his potential audience. Who you perceive your audience to be determines what objects are considered status. Rolex watch or expensive hunting rifle?
