Architecture

The international (ArchDaily) prize winning Vodafone headquarters in Oporto, northern Portugal. It takes imagination but it also takes some courage by the firm itself. The architects (very probably unknown outside Portugal) were José António Barbosa and Pedro Magalhães.

It is interesting that the modernist house style did not take hold in the US.
Instead there has been a proliferation of faux McMansions and McChateaus.
To continue on my soapbox,
I also think that many modernist large commercial structures do not succeed, whereas smaller scale structures, as exemplified by Eichler Homes, do.

I thought I'd start with a model of the Humboldt-Forum, a reconstruction (more or less) of the Berliner Stadtschloss.
This is what was demolished to make way for it, the DDR era Palast der Republik.
Architecture can be very political, especially in Berlin.

Frank Gehry's Beekman building is fabulous. The look of distortion really catches you off guard when you first see it because the proportions are right for a plane double-tower. When you look closer you see all sorts of ripples and distortions in the facade. It's really trippy.
