AZARI

fair summary?

your thoughts...

The Islamic and the leftist components of Khomeinism came apart after his death in 1989. Exhausted by war and revolution, Iran opted for normalcy. Those interested in the Islamic aspect of the revolution, the so-called conservatives, gathered around Khamenei. They ended revolutionary activism, opened the economy to private-sector activity, and erected an authoritarian theocracy run by the supreme leader.

Meanwhile, the more radical Jacobin faction, which fed on revolutionary activism and favored a socialist economy, was pushed to the margins, only to resurface in the late 1990s in the guise of reformists. So it is that Mir Hossein Mousavi, the leftist prime minister of the 1980s, has emerged as the face of the Green Movement.

Conservatives and reformists-cum-reconstructed-leftists have fought over power for the past two decades. Reformists have placed their hopes in elections and a Vatican II-style transformation of Shiite theology. Conservatives have resisted tampering with both religion and ideology and have used brute force to hold on to power. In the process, Iran's Shiite fundamentalist ideology, shorn of its leftist legacy, turned stolid and unpopular, and the regime turned to repression to survive.

Ahmadinejad arrived on the scene in 2005 promising to breathe new life into the dying revolution by combining religious fundamentalism with Iranian nationalism and economic populism. This formula -- the same one Khomeini had used to dominate the revolution in 1979 -- proved to be a clever political strategy that won him the presidency. But the promise of unending revolution came crashing down in the 2009 election, when reformists mounted a winning election campaign and then brought millions into the streets to protest the fraudulent results.

What Ahmadinejad preached posed a direct threat to the supreme position of clergy in the Islamic Republic. The president and his circle of advisors are of the view that, because of the Islamic Revolution and his defeat of the reformist challenge, Iran is now a genuinely Islamic state, and the state should take over the role of the clergy.

Iranian Filmmaker Mahnaz Mohammadi Arrested

Mohammadi was previously arrested in August of 2009, along with her peers Jafar Panahi and Rokhsareh Ghaem-maghami and a number of documentary filmmakers. It happened while they were at Tehran's Beheshte Zahra Cemetery at a gathering to commemorate people killed in election protests.

She had collaborated with Rakhshan Bani-Etemad in making "We are Half of Iran's Population", a film made about the role and demands of women in Iranian society. The film was made during the 2009 presidential election campaign, when candidates were being pressed for their policies on women's issues.

Maryam Majd is another women's rights activist recently arrested.

The women's sports photographer was arrested last week before a planned trip to Germany. According to Kaleme, she has been transferred to the 2A Ward of Evin Prison, which is the section controlled by the Revolutionary Guards.

Mansoureh Behkish, a member of the Mourning Mothers of Laleh Park, and Zahra Yazdani, are two more journalists and women's rights activists recently arrested by the Islamic Republic.

Also, prison sentences for female journalist Mahsa Amrabadi and blogger Ashraf Alikhani have been confirmed in recent weeks. Amrabadi is serving out a one-year sentence for "propaganda activities against the regime" and Alikhani was given three years for similar charges.

Never criticize anyone until you've walked several kilometres in their shoes.
Because

1. You're now several kilometres away; and

2. You've got their shoes.

speaking of tit for tat

Russian designers of Iran's nuclear plant die in plane crash

DEBKAfile Exclusive Report

The three Russian nuclear scientists who planned, designed, built and put into operation Iran's first nuclear reactor at Bushehr this year, died Tuesday night, June 20, when a Rusaero flight from Moscow to Petrozavodsk in northwest Russia crashed.

DEBKAfile's sources reveal that they were among the 44 passengers who were killed.

Their loss is a severe blow to Russia's atomic reactor industry as well as its nuclear program as a whole, since the three, Sergey Ryzhov, Gennady Banuyk and Nikolay Trunov, specialized in running installations in tandem and synchronizing various systems.

The Russian company OKB Gidropress, Moscow, which employed them as chief planners of nuclear plants, is proud of having sold reactors to five countries including Iran.

The authorities have ordered an investigation to find out why all three senior nuclear scientists were aboard the same airliner in violation of Russian security regulations which prohibit more than one high-ranking politician, military figure or executive of a sensitive industry taking the same flight,

PISS POOR OPSEC EH?

Mr Ryshov, Mr Banuuyk, Mr Trunov...

meet Mr Bull.

From the article in your post, it seems like the Revolutionary Guard is gaining more power at the expense of Ahmadinejad's camp.
