Call me corny, but I don't think race or gender are really an issue anymore. I mean Obama being black means that some of the tone of Tea Party signs etc. are racist, but its not like those people would suddenly love him if he was Irish, it would just change the "jokes" on the signs. Likewise, a woman President (left or right) would be subject to appalling sexism from the other party, but it still isn't an issue with voters. Pakistan had a female Prime Minister, so I'm guessing that America could make it happen.

But the issue with Palin and Bachman is that they don't seem like legitimate candidates. I mean they COULD win, but they both seem dangerously stupid. Its almost baffling that they are potential nominees.

There must be something about the party apparatus, or a calculation about what voters want to see, because I know there are intelligent conservative women in the US and GOP that would make better nominees or Presidents.

The canary didn't die because this mine is dangerous, it died because it's lazy and wasn't raised with a proper work ethic.

re

"Pakistan had a female prime minister"

the reality is party leadership in Pakistan seems to be hereditary....

passed on from father to daughter in above case

and reportedly willed to her son upon her death

and assumed by husband as regent until such time...

hardly some sort of democratic benefit to be emulated

as the thankfully shortlived Bush dynasty proved.

Strange, I first starting thinking of Palin and Obama as mirror images of each other during the 2008 presidential election.

Both tickets had the old, hard core establishment politician who served in the treanches for 30+ years as either Pres or VP, and both had the young, attractive, minority, fresh thinking outsider as the other.

In doing so, both tickets cancelled out a lot of the potential criticism that might have come from their political opponents regarding youth, lack of experience, bigotry, etc............

Perhaps both camps just hired the same marketing firms that relied on the same research data........

Voting for Sarah Palin would be like someone on the left voting for Whoopi Goldberg. Both intelligent women who have managed their careers as media personalities quite savvily. Both women should NEVER BE ANYWHERE NEAR public office.

Tinker,

I still think we agree more than disagree. I actually like Obama's voice, I think it's cute. He's a sexy attractive man. ;)

Surely you are aware of Obama's "bitter clingers," "...typical white person." "I don't have all the facts but the police acted stupidly..." "57 states," "My uncle liberated Auschwitz...." etc. statements.

Regarding who has said more foolish things, Obama or Palin, I'd probably have to let Google make that decision. An hour or so googling Obama gaffes, Palin gaffes, Obama-isms and Palin-isms ought to settle it.

No public figure who has been in the limelight more than 3 months seems to be free of contradictions, lies, and screw ups. Sucks to be a politician in the Information Age.

Obama is by far the better presenter, city mouse vs. country mouse, house wife arguing against a lawyer (hint: don't marry a female lawer!). Comparing the text of a pre-November 2010 Obama speech to an audio recording of the same ought to convince anyone of his obvious gift of delivery.

I absolutely agree, that Palin complaining about gotcha questions during an interview is positively juvenile and cry-babyish. "I'm a victim! Life is unfair" Who in their right mind would want such a whiny-butt as their president?

As she would say..... to someone else: "Buck up or stay in the truck!"

Then again...... Obama..... and Emanual...... and Axlerod........ and Gibbs complaining about Fox news or Limbaugh ("The Republicans can not let Rush Limbaush tell them what to do!") or Beck, strikes me as exactly the same juvenile, cry-babyish "I'm a victim! Life is unfair" attitude

Except then it was an official policy and an extended campaign of POTUS and his staff!!!!

Bizzarre!!! First time in my adult life I've seen any POTUS play the victim card.

That, my friend, is both an indication of an individual's character (actually the character of several players), and a sad, sad statement of our society.

Fascinating times. I don't think who the president is, is anywhere near as important as his/her advisors are, and the hand Fate deals him/her. Events often seem to overwhelm the person occuying the office.

Regarding who I would want to face off against Putin....... hands down Obama.... but Michelle Obama, that is ;)

After seeing what Obama has done in office, I still think he is superior to his predecessor and the other options available in the field.

Sure he has disappointed me in a great number of ways. But I still think he was the best option out of the available field of candidates.

The conclusion I have drawn from the Bush and Obama presidencies is that the Federal Government has too much power and that we need to start moving some of its functions back to the local level. Simply because there are no people alive competent enough to run an organization the size and scope of the Federal Government.

People complain about untested and without experience, but an old man like John McCain who doesn't use e-mail is simply beyond unqualified to govern a country after the advent of the internet. That's part of the problem we have here. Obama understood the internet better than any of the others, as was evidenced by his microfinanced social media campaign. To me that's very important otherwise you get, "It's like a series of tubes", from people who are exercising their power to regulate something that they have no comprehension of.

The problem with the Presidency in the information age at the turn of the millenium is that there wasn't a single person alive with experience.
