The Fate of Nuclear Power

This is for discussions of things that are not exactly philosophical in nature, but just descriptive of things that go on in the real world.

Let's just stop arguing and burn more coal instead, it seems less controversial than nuclear at this point. The newest plants are pretty clean, considering the fuel.

I would say keep the nuclear we already have with better oversight (and be cautious about expansion) and have more natural gas and renewable.

I don't like repeating myself, but I guess I'm going to have to say it yet again (due to your poor reading comprehension):

I consider the German government's plan to completely get rid of nuclear power to be an overreaction.

That means that I am against the plan.

Now you (hopefully) know my opionion of the plan. So please return to your troll cave.

Have you been reading my posts? I've said that the German plan was an overreaction over and over again and I was wondering what your problem was.

Now, you've finally figured out that we agree? Did you even bother to read my posts before responding to them? I said that the German plan was an overreaction right after you claim I "butt in" (odd choice of words, considering you own neither the forum nor the thread).

And why did I "butt in"? Because you found some lame excuse to parrot the long-debunked 1950s propaganda line that nuclear power is "nearly free".

1) "Germany on the margin": aerofarming would increase the demand for electricity. That would mean building more power plants. Building more nuclear power plants would be very expensive.

2) "1960s propaganda": the fact that nuclear power is and very highly taxpayer subsidized is not "1960s propaganda", it is a fact.

This has gone on too long. I'm getting tired of repeating myself and watching you make an ass of yourself. You've hijacked this thread for long enough.

There isn't a massive amount of unused electricity capacity in Germany just waiting for a huge, electricity-intensive industry. If Germany were to develop an additional electricity-intensive industry, that would mean enough increased demand that more capacity would have to be built, making the cost of the marginal unit include the cost of building more capacity, not just fuel. You're the one who has difficulty grasping basic economics. If your factory is running at 100% capacity, the marginal cost of an additional unit is a lot higher than if your factory was running at 85% capacity. Why? Because it costs money to increase capacity.

You really look like a complete idiot and arrogant buffoon when you accuse me of not understand the "on the margin thingy" and then demonstrate complete ignorance of very basic economics. Do yourself a favor and stop hijacking this thread. The longer this goes on, the more people will see what a fool you are.

If you plan on reducing capacity and then change your mind, you don't end up with more capacity than you had at the beginning, you end up with the same.

It's like losing $20 at the slots and winning it back at poker. You're no richer than when you started.

Meeting greatly increased demand for electricity would require increasing capacity. I understand you aren't arguing for additional nuclear power plants in Germany, but existing capacity is already being used. The fact that the power plants may or may not be decommissioned in the future doesn't create free capacity.

Political games that end up not leading anywhere (which are preferable to political games that end up somewhere worse) don't increase capacity.

Let's shut the nukes down. No let's not. Nearly free power! Merely considering getting rid of nuclear power plants makes them free. It's like magic! Sorry, it doesn't work that way. The plants still have to be paid for, and they ain't cheap. And if you want more power, you'll need more plants. Word games don't make electricity.

I haven't changed my mind. I've said over and over again that I disapprove of Germany's plan.

You're the one who still thinks he can create something by thinking of destroying something and then changing his mind. Most children outgrow magical thinking by the time they're seven. Not you. I'm afraid you won't get me to agree with you on your magical powers. You probably should have tried to fool me decades ago.

Claim that there is a problem at a flooded Nebraska Power Plant.

Not sure of the veracity. But I thought I'd post it anyhow.

It sounds like what's going on at that plant is but we should hopefully know more eventually.

Apparently there is a lot of leaking Tritium at various nuke sites in the US.

Never criticize anyone until you've walked several kilometres in their shoes.
Because

1. You're now several kilometres away; and

2. You've got their shoes.
