In my view time has come for Southern European countries to leave the EU and create another association with different objectives and methods. Portugal, Spain, Italy, Greece, Cyprus, Malta, Slovenia, Romania and Bulgaria should create a Southern European Union, with their own currency and central bank, dedicated to promoting growth and development for all. Budget balance, inflation control and strict interpretation of competition rules would be secondary, growth, trade balance and solidarity would become the new group's priorities. Eventually this Southern European Union could develop a closer relationship with Turkey, Israel, Lebanon, and the Maghreb countries. Free trade would be kept with the other European countries, but with a currency better adjusted to Southern European realities. The attitude of Northern European countries is such, that it is no longer possible to stay with them in the same EU. Today, at a conference in my university, I heard a former Portuguese minister of foreign affairs telling us about the incredible antagonism existing (2008) between Northern and Southern European countries, in the course of European Council meetings, showing that the European ideal has all but disappeared. For Northern European countries, making money has become the only objective, and the EU is seen simply as a means to that end. And fuck the PIGS...
