No , I mean demand less. Demand less cars , demand lower standards of living , demand less of the things you do demand. May be semantic , but this points to the conscious repudiation of the biggerbetterfastermore infection.

And the people printing off SMGs won't be doing with less by choice , they will garner whatever resources they have to get those printers , even if their neighbors must starve. History shows that people beat plows into swords , not the other way around. Unless they make a conscious choice to demand less , they will demand more. The planet simply will not bear six billion Americans.

I don't disagree, I just get hung on semantics sometimes. Maybe it's the old econ classes coming back, but essentially demand == "marketplace want" (in isolation from supply) so "marketplace NOT want" just kinda doesn't compute for me. Educated beyond my intelligence, doubtless.

I'm not sure, outside of statistically insignificant isolated individuals / groups, that one can point to anywhere in history where less == more is a sustainable credo. (Almost implies a lack of competition amongst groups.) Now, for much of history, we simply didn't have the tech to supply much of "marketplace want," so studied austerity might be mistaken for noble-mindedly eschewing of conspicuous consumption. But repudiation of biggerbetterfastermore is somewhat akin to my mind of repudiating the invisible hand of the market. Might be theoretically possible, but largely unprecedented. I'm afraid I must place my bet with Murphy on this one.

I agree. That's why , whatever they may learn about careers and societies and education and whatnot , my kids will know how to make fire without matches. Again , the world will not bear six billion Americans. We have infected the planet with the most pernicious envy ever known to man. The center will not hold.
