While Americans freeze, drown or get twistered away, NW Europe is shaping up for the worst drought since 1976, and maybe since 1911. In southern England there were some thunderstorms last Thursday, but otherwise no significant rain for nearly three months, and the wheat crop is lost. To quote from an otherwise unmemorable film set in southern California, today is another f***ing sunny day. The real worry is crops in nothern France, the breadbasket of Europe and a big exporter.
. Last year it was Russia and eastern Europe, in 2008 the Med - this year these areas are well watered, as the Atlantic depressions go either north or south of a blocking high pressure stuck over Denmark.
Pessimism is the soft option.
