Hunting ranges, in my limited experience, are pretty much dictated by terrain. Out west, 250-300 yards are sometimes the ranges where you will get your only shot. As far as hunting, the goal is of course to get as close as you can. As close as you can. Sniping though, the goal is to get as far away as you can, so very opposite mindsets.

308 is a worthy cartridge, no question. If you want to take the edge off a 30-06, works great. I just don't see why it survived so long as a sniper round. I know why, but it isn't a good reason.

Never criticize anyone until you've walked several kilometres in their shoes.
Because

1. You're now several kilometres away; and

2. You've got their shoes.

I know he said he used to hunt groundhog with a Mini-14 (too loud for his and his dog's tastes IIRC) and later a .22LR.

On groundhog, unless you use accurate head shots, a .22LR is gonna be a slow(er) death, particularly a body shot that doesn't take out the heart or lungs. But that's not a blanket indictment of either bullets or the .22LR.

I'd like to see his citation for the prohibition on hunting. Nimrod, Gen 10:9? :?

Killing animals by properly placed bullets of appropriate ammo is about as fast a method I can think of, short of dropping a grand piano on them or something.

Odd. Just. Odd.

hunting with bows and arrows does mean for slow painful deaths and animals escaping with wounds that kill them from infection, id says its out of date for a headshot from a large calibre gun.

speaking of which - the bleeding hearts have banned live animal exports from australia because *some* indonesian slaughter houses dont stun the animals before killing them, putting our cattle industry into chaos.

respect becomes symbolised respect becomes vanity... one of the blurry things that leaves me cold with much and most definately with myself.

as a matter of respect you should be aware of your killing, its impact on the animal and its family group and minimise its suffering in pain as you would wish your suffering in pain minimised... wolves take a percentage of the young and the old as a rule, something that keeps that animals family healthier than killing the prime adults for the sake of killing them.

avoiding suffering.. hmm, kidding yourself that the industrial vegetable plantation is killing less animals .. hmm.

I know what you mean DoU. I tried to point out to Pastaneta that she was an inspiration to anti-semites everywhere.

I try not to let it get to me though. I am pretty much a crypto-judeophile. There's a lot about Jewish culture that I like and I think that there is a practical spirituality there that really has found some of the best ways of walking through this life as a community of people. A lot of the changes I'd make to America would be inspired by Israelis. But you have to take the good with the bad, there are a lot of things that are pretty repulsive about it too.

But I can't fault someone for wanting to minimize the suffering as best they can.

When smoking DMT I came to a recognition of something in death. So many people think that DMT brings you an understanding of death and will claim that DMT is dying and being reborn. In a way that's true, but mostly it really isn't. What it did do for me was bring me right to the edge. It peeled away all of the blocks on suffering and I realized what agony I am in 24/7. Then it began to strip away my personality to a core, 'me', a me without properties other than simply being me, there was nothing else, I perceived nothing at all other than myself and a sense of the divine presence. The horror that I should take the very next step the one beyond death was terrible to behold. When stripped of all sense, there was no time, there was no space, at least not forward, there was the faint memory of there once having been that, but even that was stripped away. And what I realized about death is that when you are dying a quick death is no different from a long and agonizing one. When your mind begins to shut down, when it loses attachment to sensory perception, when it loses the concept of time and space, the moment feels eternal, the very notion of a 'quick and painless death' is absurd. The only way a death can be quick and painless is if your mind is obliterated faster than neurons can communicate signals to one another. And slitting a throat simply is not that. There is plenty of time to be in anguish for eternity when your blood is pouring out your neck.
