longtime advocate of assimilation who had
an epiphany and turned around and wrote

Goldman's disenchantment with youth
could be a reaction to the well known
disenchantment of Jewish youth with
the new golden calf they must worship...

A report asserted that Orthodox Jews would become the majority of Israel by 2030, with the so-called Haredim, or ultra-Orthodox, reaching one million people. The report by the University of Haifa cited a galloping birth rate by religious Jews, which exceeded both that of their secular counterparts and many Arabs.

"The public agenda, the public square and the cultural aspects of the country stand to all reflect the spirit of the Haredi and religious world," the report, titled "Israel 2010-2030: On the Path to a Religious State," said. "The more the Haredi sector grows, the wider the economic gaps between that sector and the rest of the population will be."

The report, authored by demographer Arnon Sofer, said the ultra-Orthodox, based on an annual natural increase rate of up to seven percent, would expand their representation in Israel's parliament. Sofer said Haredi political parties would seek to enhance Jewish observance in public life.

"Education will become Torah-based, courts will be operated according to Jewish religious law and much of the media will undergo a transformation in which a large amount of the content it broadcasts will disappear," the report said.

If religious fanatics become a majority in Israel, many secular Jews would find it intolerable and move to the U.S., Canada, etc.

The religious fanatics, who live off of welfare provided by secular Israelis and Arabs, would find it hard to survive.

It was disheartening to see "Spengler" get stuck on what he didn't like about Obama, and I think, in general, his writing has gone downhill ever since, but this latest piece is just plain crazy.

The comment by Collingwood, who after long absence appears to be back, at least long enough to make a joke about Goldman's latest essay, reiterates the question I posed on this forum some while ago about how seriously we should take pundits who indulged youthful enthusiasms that are so contrary to the pet ideologies they latched on to later in life.

Spenglerman has been "done" even since he outed himself, but the tone over at his forum these days is pretty ridiculous.

I don't think they appreciated what excellent cover all of the sane members provided, and when they drove off all the Colonel Suns and Sparkys and Tinkers and YMixes there was no one left to maintain the PH balance in that pool, nor is there the paycheque motivation there was a First Things to occasionally skim out some of the turds left floating around.
