Chinese have advantages too ..
The dont have bueracracies that are put it place when an organization matures. Engineers at Boeing and Lockheed need to go thru hoops (design reviews done by committees , finance approval, ROI justifications etc.. etc..) to move a rivet by one hundreth of an inch.
Their programs are funded by government - where strategic advantages can override any poor ROI.
Our best brains goto wallstreet - theirs study science & engineering.
I wont be surprised if China starts building their own civilian aircrafts! I have seem regional jets made in Brazil serve reliably for long periods.

Can you think of a world-class brand from China? China Mobile comes up in some surveys, but it is a state-owned service firm that only operates in China.
Where is their Intel, their Samsung, their Toyota, their Nokia, their Siemens? China doesn't produce anything world-class.

HTC is taiwanese .. have to really start splitting hairs to say they are much different than the chinese in terms of ability to innovate in the tech world.
the only historical reason for difference is the government posture towards such things, and that reason is gone now that the mainland has embraced technology.
keep dreaming of a world where asia needs the west for intellectuals, it is just a dream - the correction is already happening but most western goverments and many individuals are comforting themselves with tedious cliches from the maoist era - they cant innovate, they need us for universities and services... sigh.
