Are people really mystified why nobody in Abbottabad was turning in OBL? Bin Laden is still viewed as a hero in the war against the Soviets (which affected the Pakistani and Afghan population more than any other group). On the other hand, the people looking for him (the US) are the ones killing civilians with drone strikes and screwing with the opium trade, and those are just the facts. If you accept, as I'm sure many in Pakistan do, the fictional narrative that the US is conducting some neo-crusade against Muslims generally then not turning over Bin Laden is even more of a no-brainer.

And of course this doesn't even take into consideration the question of fear. OBL had at least some powerful friends in the ISI or Pakistani army, and snitching can get you dead in L.A., let alone Pakistan. As it stands, the courier who provided details on Bin Laden's location was killed in the firefight at the compound (according to CNN). So I guess he won't be collecting the reward money.

Yes, the article I just posted confirms this. Through torture, we got his name (nickname), and then through dumb luck we intercepted a call and surveilled him without his knowledge. So the Pakis did NOT give him up.

However, lots of people in the neighborhood had to know.

Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton says counterterrorism cooperation with Pakistan helped lead the U.S. to al-Qaida leader Osama bin Laden and the compound outside the Pakistani capital where he was killed by American special forces.

Speaking to reporters at the State Department on Monday, Clinton thanked Pakistan for its cooperation and said the country "has contributed greatly to our efforts to dismantle al-Qaida." She said that "in fact, cooperation with Pakistan helped lead us to bin Laden and the compound in which he was hiding."

Clinton's comments came amid questions over whether Pakistani intelligence and military officials knew of bin Laden's whereabouts so close to Islamabad and whether they had shared the information with the U.S.
