Well Christians everywhere are guilty of political intrigue, that's just normal human behavior. But in the case of the Romans, a lot of the conversion occurred as a result of an act of state and not a genuine revelation and alteration of faith on a personal level. But I did acknowledge the Roman Empire, and recognized it as anomalous.

Italian city people were just like any other city people. The cities were places were riches gathered and piety went out the window. Roma was the place were the popes, cardinals and their henchmen poisoned each other. Venezia couldn't care less about the Christian rules on usury. Between the 4th century AD and 1960, Firenze became the home of the Renaissance movement somewhere on the way. And this is just scratching the surface.

My point was that city people were the first to convert to Christianity and also the first to ditch whatever part of Christianity they didn't find convenient. Not being saints is putting it mildly.
