Thanks CD. Know very little about handgun cartridges and hunting.

To me, the 1873 Winchester rifle is the most beautiful gun ever made, and I don't own one. The 44-40 isn't that great a round, I believe the only people who shoot that are Old West enthusiasts, so would love to get one in a usable chambering. I read that the 1873 receiver is too small for a 30-30, which would be a great hunting round obviously, but no luck there so am looking at that 44 mag.

To me nothing could be as mystical as hunting with an 1873 Winchester lever gun.

I think of really heating up a .44 Mag as making sense only for a dedicated handgunner going for the largest game in America . If I am going to carry anything with a shoulder stock, I'll get something hotter than a .44 . A nice Ruger Mk1 in featherweight trim ,in .270 ( or heavier, depending) as a walking rifle comes to mind .

Sorry. I meant a .

A rifleman's rifle. Anybody can buy one , but to my mind , unless you really rate that kind of purity of form , you embarrass yourself. I am not a master of the skill enough to even think on it. When I can stand and hit what I can reliably range , as quickly as I can think to pull the trigger , then I will step to that. But that's just me.

On that note , I have decided to lay off the AR purchase. Instead , I'm going to wear out the barrel on this M44.

Ah. I have a fascination with the Ruger No. 3. I doubt I'll ever have the spare cash, and I haven't seen one in quite some time at a gun show, but if I found one in .30-40 Krag, .44 Mag., or .45-70 Gov't I would be sorely tempted.

I once saw a 2-ga. shotgun shell (designed for commerical duck hunting, obviously not involving a shoulder-fired weapon). If you don't want to make each round that large, put out more rounds....

"Dont try at home , I am professional Russian ".

There is a video for someone shooting a 25 lb , 2 bore shoulder cannon out there somewhere. I'll try and find it.

So , today did an even swap . My G26 w night sights and gear for an XD .45 w/ Trijicons from a retired meatcutter that can't do the recoil any more. That made me feel even better about the deal , a seasoned brother keeping himself in the game while I ramped back up.

I decided to go back to a large duty handgun because I can deal with the size by virtue of how I carry , and I am tired of wondering if I just had a squib fire. The 9mm is just too small for me aesthetically. That G26 did everything I wanted it to so well that I took it to the range on a number of occassions where I fired maybe one mag and put it down. It was the least fun way to be completely competent imaginable. I don't honestly expect the .45 to be magically better , but I like it better. Been looking for just this deal for some time. My gun acquisitions are low probability / high inspiration affairs. This one felt right. I expect good things out of my shooting from this one.

The above AR has been rumored to be the next gen AR to replace the M4 which replaced the M16. I wouldn't get that excited about the German engineering angle, I think the gas system has been updated to run faster and cooler but there have been a number of people working on that stuff for awhile. The rest is using different Barbie Doll parts.

Frankly, it seems like military guns are about 30 years behind the times, I think BobW had an explanation for that, a BobW wildly entertaining explanation. Miss that guy.

Well this is supposedly the first gun to move away from direct impingement, which should have been done away with some time ago. But, that could just devolve into an AR critique list.

More to the point is the move for snipers to shoot a 300 winmag. I have no idea what that is about. Snipers are supposed to operate at several hundred yards, 7mm short mags perform better out there in terms of BC and are pretty close in terms of lethality. Ya gotta hit 'em first.

The only people that use the 300 winmag are people that are shooting larger game inside 300 yards. Not really the task of the sniper IMV. The only excuse I can come up with is the desire to use old stuff because it is "debugged". Which can read "obsolete" or "does not apply".

IMV for long range hunting or tactical, 7mm or 300 SHORT mag are your choices. 308 is good if you need a short barrel, other than that I don't know what it gives you over the other choices. Even taking low recoil into account, a sniper is only supposed to shoot 1 or 2 shots on a mission. You can always bust out the muzzle brake also. Combined personell/antimaterial round is a coin toss between 338 Lapua and Cheytac 408.
