Rainfall.

Iodine melts at 113.7 °C, just above the boiling point of water, producing vapour which enters the atmosphere.

How big is the Pacific Ocean?

Some perspective. Between 1946 and 1958 the US set off 23 nuclear devices of ever larger yield in the Bikini Atoll of the Marshall Islands in the Pacific Ocean.

During these tests there was one immediate fatality. A crew member of an ill-fated Japanese fishing vessel who died from fallout radiation poisoning from the largest US hydrogen bomb test, Castle Bravo, with a yield of about 15 Megatons. At first, the US tried to cover up the injuries to the Japanese crew. This was an especially dirty bomb spreading dangerous levels of radioactive fallout over an area of radius about 160km.

The other fallout was a string of Godzilla movies.

Civilization survived both. The Fukushima incident is a drop in the [Pacific] ocean by comparison.

Today one can inhabit the atoll although consuming plants grown there is not recommended due to Sr-90, with a half-life of 28.8yr, in the soil.

_____

As a footnote, the two piece swimsuit is named after the atoll.

Looks like you're going to die.

If not by fallout in the air, then by contamination in the water, and definately by a reawakened radioactive Godzilla.

Stereotype much?

You should be downing potassium iodide pills by the handful, stockpiling water and food, and vigilantly watching the coast of Portugal for the imminent appearance of Godzilla.

_____

I'm wondering about the very high radioactivity reading, 10^7 above background, reported in the water in reactor 2: real or a measurement error.

probably never expected the unit named in his honour, the , to become part of the popular jargon being explained to the public by pundits who, as one British comedian observed, have trouble describing the colour of Kate Middleton's dress.

The reported, and then retracted, radiation level would have killed in seconds anyone attempting to obtain a sample.

Just watched NHK English's most recent news update and...

two weeks onwards and more than 30K people in Issinomaki still relying one rice ball/pastry a day to get by (?!). No water, showers, or change of clothes for that matter as well.

Roads may be destroyed, but sea lanes are still open, ships can go through, port is undamaged. In addition, many empty areas near the coast.
Haven't they heard of impromptu, human transport chains? Air drops?

The Colonel is right, the nuke plant isn't what we should be talking about. Unfortunately, that makes the overall picture that much worse.

What may be even worse, I'm given to understand most container shipping insurance does not cover "radiation hazards"...

Rebuilding in Japan

Postby Alexis » Tue Mar 29, 2011 9:44 am

Where is Japan going to find the money to pay for reconstruction?

Wonder what Japanese decision-makers will choose?

The Union of Perpetually Alarmed, cough, Concerned Scientists is a bit of misnomer as today anyone can join - no different than Greenpeace. Post Cold War mission creep.

What I'm interested in is have they moved the hands on their famous clock closer to doomsday?

I suggest you visit the site zerohedge.com:

Enough histrionic hysterical speculation to satisfy even the diligently lead foil wrapped iteotwawki alarmist

The comments sections are especially entertaining - strong evidence that Idiocracy is a documentary on the here and now.
