How big is the Pacific Ocean?
Some perspective. Between 1946 and 1958 the US set off 23 nuclear devices of ever larger yield in the Bikini Atoll of the Marshall Islands in the Pacific Ocean.
During these tests there was one immediate fatality. A crew member of an ill-fated Japanese fishing vessel who died from fallout radiation poisoning from the largest US hydrogen bomb test, Castle Bravo, with a yield of about 15 Megatons. At first, the US tried to cover up the injuries to the Japanese crew. This was an especially dirty bomb spreading dangerous levels of radioactive fallout over an area of radius about 160km.
The other fallout was a string of Godzilla movies.
Civilization survived both. The Fukushima incident is a drop in the [Pacific] ocean by comparison.
Today one can inhabit the atoll although consuming plants grown there is not recommended due to Sr-90, with a half-life of 28.8yr, in the soil.
_____
As a footnote, the two piece swimsuit is named after the atoll.
Never criticize anyone until you've walked several kilometres in their shoes.
Because
1. You're now several kilometres away; and
2. You've got their shoes.
