It was the 9.0M earthquake generated tsunami that caused damage to the Fukushima Daiichi plant, not the earthquake itself.

[14 metres = 45.9 feet]

The 40 year old reactor site, with what some claim is a troubled history, was hit with an earthquake and tsunami far far above it's design parameters and not a single civilian life has been lost due to the breakdown. Not just continued but accelerated nuclear power development in Japan has my vote.

The fixation of the Western media on a minor event takes away from the actual tragedy that has occurred.

That's the nature of Western Media. Remember that next time you watch a political show.

Endo,

How many people died from the Fukushima nuclear disaster, due to radiation?

How many was that again? Louder, I didn't hear it the first time.

Oh, I see. You're talking out of your ass again. The plant was built to withstand 20 feet tsunamis, which were considered at the time of its construction the largest that could conceivably strike the facility. By your own article, the notion that large tsunamis could hit this part of the coast had no historical backing until a few years ago, when tsunami experts realized that extent of an earthquake-caused tsunami that struck the place 1200 years ago.

By your definition of good planning, Lisbon should have a 50 feet tall wall surrounding it, since we know of at least one massive tsunami that struck it less than 3 centuries ago.

It is worth noting, however, that the 1755 tsunami caused destruction as far away as Brazil, and hit Ireland, S.W England, the Carribean, and western France - the latter nowadays with a lot of nuclear power stations.

So the measurements made in N Am are more accurate than those made on-site in Japan?

You can watch the people in Tokyo panicking here in real time: Shibuya Ekimae [in front of Shibuya Station]

Not.
