The CANDU design certainly has it's merits.
However, the dominant factor here I think is politics not physics.
The US has a considerable investment in the competing LWR technology and thus that is what it wants to sell regardless of relative engineering merit.

For the record and in support of the what-kills-who thesis: more people died in Israeli traffic accidents than in all their wars, victims of terrorism included. If that is not enough: Japanese cars have also in the Holy land a very good name.

A question. in light of the tragedy did anyone notice no post-Katrina looting and social breakdown? The engineers, emergency services, military, etc.; all performed as they should have and the people lined up stoic-like, shed a few tears, and got down to business. Along the way they all acted with apparent care for others and an astonishing level of self control. What's up with that?

Given the proliferation of CT scanners, I suspect that the medical x-ray percentage has increased significantly since 1987.
