Quite right.
The number of coal mining, oil drilling, storage explosion, transportation accidents, etc, death per year completely dwarfs any nuclear power related deaths.
In other words, there is no free lunch.

Does Colonel Sun have any comments about the Japanese alternative to pressurized water reactors: the molten salt reactors (Fuji, and others)?
Apparently the thorium molten salt reactors are not only 100 % safe, but if developed, even more economical in the long run. The only issue is to fight the lobbies that are against it (not just the fossil fuel industry, but even the uranium industry would be opposed.)
Clearly it's time to allocate a lot of government funds for the molten salt reactors; and this is not because of the earthquake, but for economic reasons.

I didn't realize the BWRs involved were Mark I designs. The oldest design vs a disaster of unforeseen magnitude. To think that those reactors almost made it to decommissioning without incident, and now this.

My prayers and sympathies for the nation and people I have come to admire. My prayers are also for the 50 odd brave souls that are staying inside the plant to keep things under control. They are the true heros.
US networks are covering the scare about impending nuclear meltdown than the tragedy caused by tsunami & the earth quake.
To put this scare in perspective, can anyone articulate the amount of nuclear material that is stored in this plant vis-a-vis an atom bomb? Will it cause much worse radation than the hiroshima/nagasaki fallout or bikini atoll explosion?
