in australia he would have just died in the queue, but no, you wouldnt have got the bill - our medicare costs alot but only delivers the basics, its a rich mans game getting good coverage no matter what the system is.

re building codes, true for this example, false for the example of me paying 250 grand for the legislated minimum accepted "standard" from the legislated approved builders in the legislated approved colours and technologies.

not a good place to be poor in australia, the middle class tyranny of preserving their investements doesnt allow for small affordable housing, yet the same wankers are trying to bring in more legislation to add environmentally friendly costs above and beyond the insane status quo to push up their investment even more.

its double brick mc mansions as far as the eye can see, and its all compulsory and it will all fall down in an earth quake.

a cheap little steel frame jobbie with natural insulation is actually illegal in most suburbs, resistant to all weather and quakes and costs 50 grand, shame im not allowed that option.

ill keep chasing for personal choices, tankyouverymuch.

feh, globalism will be tyranny as far as i can tell, its only the quaint little local customs that allow the differences to happen.

1 voice in 6 billion is not a voice, 1 voice in my local community actually can be heard, provided my local community has self determination power, otherwise its just a small voice in australia which is a small voice in the world... and irrelevant.

health care wasnt something i complained about actually, you brought it up, i mentioned that public health care still means deaths in the waiting queue... you dont want to get sick in perth on a weekend at night, i can garuntee most of those statistics occur then :)

if you dont want that, you need expensive private insurance, same in both systems - i accepted long ago to be comfortable with my death because i dont jusitfy the expense of private... shame im not allowed to choose to live that way, but no matter, the government is busy getting rid of medicare at the moment because they know its going to fall apart when the baby boomers retire, demographics is a bitch and you can only immigrate so many people.

i was complaining about then facist rules that dictate my transport, housing and food, the tyranny of the magority as expressed by government legislation.

It remains to be seen whether old fashioned liberty is still feasible in the modern, globalized world. People might just get used to thinking more collectively. Certainly, values and standards are becoming more homogeneous thanks to instant worldwide communication.

im just a spectator to it, ill be dead before it gets too much worse.

but the poor sods that keep crying about liberty and freedom, the ones that think they should be able to experiment with drugs and all that (which i did, and enjoyed, but grew out of it) .. are in for a rude shock when it comes to tyranny of the magority .. the "government" is taking responsiblity for all the outcomes and if you want nice statistics with less bad outcomes, you wont be able to make bad choices.

all good for the types that in the past would have been part of a strict religous group, but not for the likes of me who enjoyed our brief break from historical norms and the lack of power in the church... its all a bit of a sad joke.

all hail the new pope, same as the ole pope, but now with shiny statistics instead of cryptic gospels, and allegedly you get to choose between 2 flavours of pope.

I see your point.

I guess we are torn between our love of liberty and caring for our neighbors. How do we get the trade-off right? Even if people make bad choices for themselves, it still feels wrong to watch and let them suffer, but if we are going to do something about it, we are compelled to prevent others from repeating the same dumb mistakes. There is also the undeniable fact that collective cooperation magnifies what we as humans can accomplish for ourselves, which is why we band together at the cost of personal liberty in the first place. Paradoxically, you wouldn't be able to enjoy your freedoms if not for all the civilizational infrastructure sheltering you from the tyranny of subsistence agriculture. And now that same infrastructure seems to be moving forward to take away the freedoms you cherish...

thats it, in my culture its about choices, and we dont feel bad watching others suffer from their choices provided we have clearly spoken out and made our viewpoints clear to them... its all about respect for the individual.. but my culture is weak and in its death throws, only a few loons left who think like that.

the other aspect is the progress didnt come from the magority, it came from those who did their own thing and made a new better way - nothing is as stagnant as a society that is wallowing in its own perfection....

once you get away from comparing statistics, its not that hard for me, if you want a nice neat collective join one, their are so many .. dont go making the entire society into one collective with one way of living life.

more, i dont think you care unless you get involved, if your definition of caring is passing a new law and getting shaudenfraude from the bad ones being punished you dont care.

intervention is kicking peoples worlds out from underneath them, if your not prepared todo the hard yards before, during, and after... you dont care and you should shut up.

statistics are a distraction, different lifestyles with different priorities will generate different statistics, just like they generate different holy books.

noddy, you seem to be under the impression that people get immediate service in emergency rooms in the U.S. That is most definitely not the case. The experiences you speak of in Australian emergency rooms would sound familiar to most Americans.
