Probably better for you than to try to maintain some POV on hunting based on some past experience murdering songbirds.

In the old days , you could count coup on someone without killing them because the killing ( unless you actually needed the enemy dead for some reason) became superfluous. If you can close with an enemy and touch him with your hand or a decorated " coup stick" , you could have touched him with a hand axe. I sort of see photo hunting as something of the same thing as regards rifles and whatnot.

And so the ritual drifts further and further from its essence, to finally lose all semblance...

Sorry, not for me. I hunt to kill and kill so that I may have hunted. Nothing against birding or photography, they are just entirely different endeavors.

I take the point , but after a while the kill becomes less distinctive. Hunting has for me been as much a test as anything , and I have long seen it the way the knights in Europe saw hunting boar with swords- enough of a challenge where commoners were restricted from it. It's a simulation for war. On another level , it's food chain 101. I guess it depends on why you hunt as to whether something is lost by using a camera. Like I say , the last few times I went out for deer , I was so little concerned with actually getting a shot that I brought my pipe. Getting old , I guess.

But I know where you're coming from. It's not really hunting unless something dies.

I gave up hunting (shooting, as they say in the UK), at the age of 15, when I decided that there was something wrong about killing for sport. I still accept killing for food, but I don't do it myself...

Call it intent , then. If the core measure of a fighter is his willingness to close with and engage the enemy with force , then the measure of a hunter is his willingness to pursue and end something. My intent on that has been flagging enough that I think I will restrict my hunting in the future to what can be accomplished with a .44 revolver or a .22 auto.

Nice hunt , BTW. I've been at altitude , but I am Apalachian , from the old mountains that became too worn and tired to hold snow many years ago. The young rock mountains are either silent or they shreik. Those old men are always mumbling. More memories , more life. Smaller spirits , though , than those of the high rocks.

News to me, maybe not everyone, but I found out about which sells the stuff to turn a Glock or 1911 into one of these:



At $349 + accessories + Glock it's not exactly the most cost-effective way to get to a pistol caliber carbine (see Hi-Point or Kel-Tec), but I find it interesting...
