When you live in an organized society, your business becomes everybody else's business to a greater extent than you may want, or even control.....

Smoking itself, not the problem. Dying from lung cancer is a problem for the smoker, his family and his community support. Lung cancer isn't the big problem, it kills you and is it's own solution. In addition to cancer, smokers may get COPD, a far more pernicious and devastating issue as it doesn't kill you outright but is very expensive and labour consuming to manage and maintain. It's like diabetes of the lungs. There is no treatment that leads to a cure I know of, and a sufferer can run through his resources and available community support like crap through a goose.......

Since we are a 'humane' culture and does not practise triage, a large population of smokers, legal or otherwise becomes a looming social predicament. That's how your personal business becomes the legitimate concern of everybody else......

durr..... I had my go around with the "self-inflicted needy' for the past two weeks. Nearly cost me my job and career, it did. If you've noticed, I'm not particularly polite tonight. There was a reason for it......

When someone is shot in half on a battlefield but can still carry on conversation, they don't start feverish work on him while the guy with the bullet in the shoulder bleeds out. They hit him with a shitload of painkillers and let him say his peace to the sky .

That's me. I have been around nursing homes long enough to know that it is ( past a certain age) a one way trip . What are you keeping 80 year old people sober and in pain for ? So they can resume their career as a triathelete ? So we won't be scandalized by the appearance that granny is a junkie ? I'm telling you , it's fear of sorcery .

If I am walking the dog one day in my decrepitude and my bunghole falls out and am thus deprived of the opportunity for the Long Hunt, frakkin' load me up like Hunter S Thompson in Vegas , throw me a T1 cable line, and leave me the hell alone. I'll be out of the bedspace shortly .

On the other end of the spectrum, a member of my family is in his mid nineties, still has all his mental faculties, is physically active, and completely independent.

Everyone is forever telling him to take it easy, be very careful and worries nonstop every time he goes off on one of his adventures.

My attitude is let him do whatever he wants, he's earned it.
