Evolution is about a change in a species. It's not about breaking or forming faculties, it's merely about heritable traits being altered.
The canary didn't die because this mine is dangerous, it died because it's lazy and wasn't raised with a proper work ethic.

ever seen a - fins make great clumsy legs for fish that are pushing the boundaries of the waterline.
as for why they have the ability gene wise when they dont "need" it, i see that as an outcome of the random variation, we have all sorts of potential in our genes i suspect, randomly generated, that only becomes apparently useful when boundary pushing.
