I tell you this may be my next gun:

http://www.henryrepeating.com/rifle-lever-action.cfm

I kind of knock the AR here and there, but it was really a great trainer. I burned quite a few rounds and it was pretty cheap training relatively speaking. This little .22 will do nicely for that as well.

See , the Canucks got out two grand cheaper , in a superior caliber out of a brand new , not retrofitted rifle. Unlike the US Army. Probably an inherently better rifle to begin with.

Oh , btw , the whole " Soviets made inaccurate crap " line ? Total propaganda for bourgesoisie masses . I mean , the critics might be correct sone of the time , maybe most. But at 100 yds on the three shots that I didn't completely blow all by myself , I had three bullet holes touching. Out of a carbine with a folding bayonet. Maybe it's just the good stuff out of Isvesk. Dunno.

Fast firing enough that young punks on the line with two thousand dollar ARs eventually waited to fire until I was done doing five shot rapid fire strings. Recoil is negligible , blast is imperceiveable to the shooter ( though not to people nearby). Zero does shift 3 in to left w/ bayonet folded , but that is easily corrected by having a fellow shooter hold the rifle steady as you use the needlenose pliers out of your Lestherman to drift the front sight. Can't do that with the Rem 700. I would in no way feel poorly armed with that and 40 rounds. Could I have better tools ? Sure , and I probably will. But it's easy to use well. It hits like a ton of bricks and I HAVE A FREAKIN BAYONET. All boys want a rifle with a bayonet , so you can satisfy the urge to by proxy both throw things at other things and penetrate them .

I can roast hot dogs , use it as a lawn dart for those slow days in the revolution ; I can knit , hell I can even use it as a stud anchor starter for hanging picture frames on drywall. This thing is amazing , I'm telling you.
Don't know what it is, but I'm agin'it.

Surplus ammo , came out of a spam can. Going back tomorrow , probably , with better tools to manipulate the front sight. I'm making this a pet project.

It was a toss-up between here and the "Hardware and Software" thread...

You gents are bound to know this: what is that little thing at 13 seconds that looks a bit like a Sten gun?

That's a Sten alright . Notice how it hardly moved when firing one hand. There have been past masters on that little machine that could peel grapes with it .

Type 38 Arisaka

I was not at all familiar with vintage Japanese rifles, so I decided to begin addressing the gap in my education.

So, an unusual combination of Mauser and Enfield elements with Japanese touches added. And a bayonet that would impress Crocodile Dundee.

Hey you guys -- I saw one of the rifles above had a barrel that was cryogenically treated. Back in the day we used to do that with tooling (metal stamping dies) that were getting the snot pounded out them on high-speed presses. And it really helped.

What advantage is stress relieving on a barrel going to have, and do people send them back periodically to have them "reset?"

"Trinity"

Postby  ~  » Sat Feb 26, 2011 2:03 pm

The flex of a barrel is essentially the point of a "pet load": after a handloader decides on a bullet type/weight suitable for particular application, he starts with a powder type/mass from a table (manual) to give him the velocity range he wants, and then he varies it systematically to produce the most consistent barrel harmonic in his rifle.
Of course there's lots of other things he can vary - primers, case shoulder, bullet seating depth/rifling engagement, etc. But the point is to have a bullet leaving the barrel at the same point in the barrel's oscillation every time (which usually involves some compromises).

Handloading is an exercise in amateur process control. It's lots of fun giving theories an empiric workout, and shooting for accuracy and precision is deep meditation.

"...This is the doctrine he was wont to teach,
How divers persons witness in each man,
Three souls which make up one soul: first, to wit,
A soul of each and all the bodily parts,
Seated therein, which works, and is what Does,
And has the use of earth, and ends the man
Downward: but, tending upward for advice,
Grows into, and again is grown into
By the next soul, which, seated in the brain,
Useth the first with its collected use,
And feeleth, thinketh, willeth,—is what Knows:
Which, duly tending upward in its turn,
Grows into, and again is grown into
By the last soul, that uses both the first,
Subsisting whether they assist or no,
And, constituting man's self, is what Is—
And leans upon the former, makes it play,
As that played off the first: and, tending up,
Holds, is upheld by, God, and ends the man
Upward in that dread point of intercourse,
Nor needs a place, for it returns to Him.
What Does, what Knows, what Is; three souls, one man.
I give the glossa of Theotypas ..."

I have the rusted, yet still in shape metal components of a WW2 japanese rifle that I collected from the bottom of Alligator Creek in Tenaru - the site of the http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battle_of_the_Tenaru

the wiki article is slightly different to how it was explained to me, in that I was told all the japanese where rotten drunk and got gunned down on mass as they crossed the river.

I put 600 rounds yesterday through my Ruger. Only 2 jams. Even got to display a bit of marksmanship (at 5 yards!) by the 300th round or so.

(Loving cheap .22 cal ammo) :P

I'm right in there with ST, did about 300 the other day on the Ruger MkII . Thumbs not bad, but I do want to get one of those HKS loaders . Excellent accuracy if you have an actual rear sight .
