HAL9000 What makes you think Iran could occupy the Ghawar oil field? That's quite a ways from Iran, and Iran does not have the ability to project that kind of force internationally. Israel or the US would bomb that invasion force into dust.

I'd point out a could of things about the oil fields. First, they are de facto protected by the US military, so if you mess with them you've got to fight the large, US equipped and US trained Saudi Army, and the actual US army (though these days...), so it's really much more than Iran can handle. Second, not all Shia Iran. There are so many ethnic, tribal, and Shia sectarian differences it isn't a given that the Saudi Shia would ally with Iran. Though plenty of far flung Shia terrorists don't mind some free Iranian kit now and again.

I don't think America minds soft take-overs as long as it doesn't interrupt the flow of oil.

I think Persian regional hegemony would be superior to the Saudis. I've said that before. I hope that Iran drops the stupid anti-Israel rhetoric and stops shooting domestic protestors.

I don't even understand why they shoot protestors. They should recognize the American model and realize that if you ignore protestors they are pretty ineffectual.
