Cincinnatus ,

Comments from someone who is not an armchair general like me but actually out there in the thick of it are always much appreciated. But from the video, it seems like the airburst can just as easily come from the left or from the right as from above. The training video has them firing into what appears to be a mock window, suggesting that the range adjustments would allow the weapon to be set on, say, a wall + 1 meters, so as to be fired through the window and detonate 1 or 2 meters inside the room and kill or maim all inside. Of course, you have to be accurate enough to hit the window, but simply being in a building, behind a line of trees, or in a burnt out car should not necessarily be enough. No?

Never criticize anyone until you've walked several kilometres in their shoes.
Because

1. You're now several kilometres away; and

2. You've got their shoes.

I think that Cinc and ST are both right. It is justa matter of getting proper cover. However , horizontal cover is comparatively easy to find. Overhead , not so much. At the very least it will force people into places whose availability may be limited . Getting bunched up is bad. I don't think simple trees and brush will do it.

The single greatest battlefield capability is mobility, so when you start sacrificing that then you're going to be losing ground quickly.

Yes to the forward mounted scope. I have looked at it and have figured out how I would mill the rear sight base so as to permanently mount a ~ 3 in section of rail. A short red dot ( or fixed Bushmell 3x for under a hundred with mounts). Pop off the bayonet mount, cut and recrown the barrel or put on an AK style muzzle break.

If there are more blue helmeted zombies than I can kill with that and my regular business attire , then I guess I'll just have to be the one that goes down valiantly in the early part of the picture. I'm tired of all this high speed crap. I'm thinking of losing everything but a S&W Model 10 4" . 38 Special , a $ 100 rifle , a . 22 pistol and a double barrel 12 ga. Just to prove a point.

... Which was how the three selector positions on an AR I may get ( more on that later) were labeled, rather than " safe- semi- auto" as a normal issue lower is marked. It was that kind of gun show.

It was a good day over all , with two out of three deals winners. The deal I could have done better on was getting rid of a Taurus plastic 9mm. I gave a beyond good price because I thought I was about to get a nice J frame Bodyguard for the wife. However , the little Smith has some serious cosmetic issues that I would do something with , but the wife would hate , and it is to be her carry piece. As well , I wasn't going to haggle over a plastic 9mm any more than I would count worms in a bucket. It's just not worth it.

However , this whole flat spot was made better by deal two. As soon as I walked in the door , a private sale ( where the real action is at a gun show) coughed up a very interesting Ruger MkII Target with the 6 7/8" barrel. A heavy hunk of carbon steel , I'm fairly certain I could do more damage with the pistol itself than the .22 LR round it shoots. It came with a bracket the previous owner had put on which can mount a section of Picatinny rail. It replaces the adjustable part of the rear sight and while I may at some point put a small red dot on it ( but only if I were to , um , lower the gas pressure between the chamber and the muzzle dramatically , which I won't).

However , I want the thing for what it was intended to be - a tough , slick , accurate target pistol that almost can't break. So I am getting the rear sight blade out tomorrow and will replace ( it looks like so far) with either an OEM part or possibly a Millet. Unless I miss my guess this pistol has the potential to be the most fun thing to shoot that I own. It has a pointing zen that may make for epic shooting. If it does what it is telling me it can do , I will scan some 25 yard targets after I go out next time. I got this one including the rail mount for less than a new one , and I don't like the MkIII anyways. You can't wear these things out , so other than a wear spot or two that is completely irrelevant , its better than new.

The next one was the score I wanted. I had been hearing that the M44 Mosin Nagants were hard to find as the import source had dried up. Everyone has been telling me that $250 is a good price if it can be found. I had almost picked out a very good condition long barreled 91/30 version when someone pointed out the nice German/Turkish fellow named Hans that was carrying one Ishvesk model on his shoulder for half of what I had expected. Instant sale , he even had tools and sling and ammo pouch. I got the rifle and 200 rounds for considerably less than I thought I would get just the rifle. I liked that.

I am not a money guy , the experience is to me very stressful. I will let myself get taken a bit just because it's aggravating and I truly don't care. Either it's doable or it isn't. This time I made out probably up by $50-100 if all swaps were totaled , and that's uncommon. I just have to whore out for a bit so I can shoot. I resent the intrusion off commercialism into my brain space , but what are you gonna do?

Because of the Obama deluge of guns , a ton if small CNC shops are turning out good quality AR lower receivers an other parts. As a result , a local builder is making $800 rifles that would have gone for double that three years ago , based on standard features. I don't like them all that much and other than training the only other thing I could do with it is hunt deer( Florida deer are small). There is no cool in it for me. However , for blue helmeted zombies , it's just the medicine , it is indeed the Western standard , and it's like seeing a BMW M6 for ten grand. I don't want a sports car , I don't like computerized engines , but jeez- 400 horses, in that car , for ten grand ? You'd have to. Same with these $800 ARs that are being made. Maybe I'll get one , go to a school , get a plate carrier rig for it and then just drop the whole kit into the back of the locker. Forget about it until I see bowls poured out on the oceans and seals opened in heaven.

Sounds like a huge waste of money, though. My Russian rifle has a bayonet. That should do for zombies pretty good. So far , every time I pick it up , I lapse into speaking like Boris from the Bullwinkle and Rocky show. I like that too.

Exactly. Germans got pwned by Chix ! Chic wit shitty bolt action rifles!

As I am building a war belt off the Russian rifle , stuffing 40 rounds into the provided leather pouches, I was listening to music from the Great Patriotic War , giggling and muttering," This time , we get moose and squirrel ".

And now I've got Alphaville's " Forever Young" on Pandora. What a strange world.

Ok, we have not done this before I don't think, but why doesn't everyone submit their disaster guns, ie, you're headed out the door and can grab one handgun and one rifle, to go out into the wide world, ready for anything that may come up. Ammo availability may or may not be an option, you choose. Generally I am a more is better kind of guy, but realities can dictate certain things such as being limited to 2 guns.

1) Handgun: .40 cal. My preference is the Beretta. A good all around round. Runner up is 357 magnum, but most choices there are in revolver, which I am not a big fan of at the end of the day.

2) Rifle: Marlin lever 30-30. Lever is fast enough for most shooting, biggest drawback is rate of reloading. 30-30 is a good all around hunting and self defense round, but of course not ideal for any one given thing, but a pretty good generalist round for probable targets. Have become more disaffected with the AR platform as time has gone on, have not yet purchased a competitive semi auto battle type rifle.

Bolt rifle is not an option for me, I am not CD, cannot work it like he can. Would be dead real quick.

If it's all truly gone to hell and price is not an option ? SOCOM 16 and a Glock 21 with the +P 230 gr JHP .

Hey , P . Like .

Notice the enlarged loading gate . Lighten up the spring that holds the thing shut and you can reload this pretty fast . People have run light rifle classes at Gunsite with bits like this before . If you can work a lever fast, you can probably work a bolt fast .

The whole thing is that when using something that doesn't have a high rate of fire like a modern light rifle , you use different tactics . Certain concessions have to be made , but it's doable . Nobody would have said that a squad of Waffen SS armed with K98s was little or no threat, then or now . Just one of them could give you the fits . Them fellers meant it, and they worked it pretty well . We best be glad the STG-44 never got fielded widely .

Whoah CD, the idea of SHTF OTD is that you don't get 5.5 scenarios. :P But I appreciate your choices and the logic anyway.

Scenario is several nuclear strikes in country, one close by, must evacuate NOW, have room for one handgun, one rifle and that's it. Money is no object, but we'll get to the why of that later on.
