Re-re-listening to some podcasts from iTunesU today; topic of the culture wars.

The professor keenly pointed out one key difference between the Anabaptist position/bent/mentality and that of Calvin and and Calvinists. Calvin saw The State as a means of Grace, where the Anabaptists saw it as a either something of a lost cause (even Luther was on the fence a bit on this) or as something that didn't fall under the Great Commission.







CS: do we really have to play the Servetus card again? Calvin was fairly important in the Western view of government.

I don't know about that, you'd think -- if we are that much better than then -- that we would NOT see M. Albright tell 60 Minutes that 300,000 kids was 'about right.'

I kinda think the body count gets moved around, but the reasons change. But then I'd like to think that if someone gave Calvin his morning briefing on the state of his aggressive wars against the infidel, that he would have shot himself rather than cause the deaths of 300,000 children.

I can't see how you can say that though -- if the litmus test is any sort of "murderous intent," the 20th century is the last place we should look for any sort of guidance.

I can see bridling in principle against the judgmental dickheads of this or that religion. But generally speaking, if you didn't have the power and a voice, the 20th century was more than happy to run you through the mill for any number of reasons.
