Dogs

their is a breed of dog in australia called the which has its own culture that breeders protect by not getting involved in the raising of the pups, they leave it to the female kelpie.

originally a farmer spontaneously got a dog that "knew" what he was trying to achieve with the mustering and just started doing it - the farmer walked into the paddock, opened the gate to where he wanted them moved, the dog does the rest.

this "breed" doesnt actually have a look, or pure genetics, it can be cross mixes of any working dog, it is only a "kelpie" if it was raised by a kelpie and picked up the mustering skills from its parent.

they are amazing to work with, my first day on a farm i was sent out by myself with one, the farmer didnt care id never worked sheep before, he knew the dog would get it right despite me.

The way some people feel about horses, I feel about dogs. A well trained one , or rarely one with the kind of self motivation these Kelpies seem to have , is like having another human around . Biggest bunch of help you could want .

Dogs rock. Unfortunately, the stray that walked up to us a year ago is a bulldog in name only. He's the biggest wuss in the county . If he wasn't so good with the kids, he wouldn't be worth the flatulence ( which is considerable) .

This is the most use he could be put to . Maybe . I doubt he'd sit still long enough .

Don't know what it is, but I'm agin'it.

Facing a chance to get an Aussie Cattle Dog. Handsome animal and seems wicked smart, but the lady of the house is not onboard. I love the lady, but this dog seems like a fine companion. I think it might even help me grow a pair.

i love hounds, all the gun dogs have a level of awareness that matches the herding dogs, but they are a tad lazier, or atleast more prepared to take things slowly ;)

my mother was also not a dog person, but she grew to love hounds because they are so aware and will typically check their behaviour without needing any "alpha" pressure, her being upset is enough to make them stop and think.

my staffy doesnt really rate emotional distresss, its response is more like what you would get from a teenage footballer :)

Love the hounds, grew up fox and deer hunting around Walkers and Cur dogs . You can tell by their particular sound what is happening . It tells a story . We would let the dogs out in huge pens of several hundred acres where coyotes and fox lived ( both could leave at any time, and nobody ever caught a coyote that I knew of . Would have wished they hadn't , if they had ) . All night long, while the bottles and so forth got passed around, we would listen to the dogs sing. Owners knew their dog in a pack, knew what he was after, whether he had a good lock, if he was getting tired, if he was mad at being last in a run . The hounds were not house dogs, damn near wild, would hardly suffer to be put caught when exhausted so they could be forced to rest . You couldn't pet or play with them, they just didn't give a damn. They wanted to eat and run, that's it , and not in that order . Just like sled dogs, only meaner by temperament . These boys were not out to catch the thing they were after and then wonder what to do with it . If allowed, they'd tear it apart .
Don't know what it is, but I'm agin'it.

their is that type of hunting hound too.. different to the "gentleman with his shotgun" type like labradors and bassets which plod along patiently beside you and wait their moment.

over here that type tends to be pig dogs, and is more cross bred with pitbull/staffy than the aforementioned, did a bit of that, mightdo a bit more in the future if my current plans come off.

I haven't handled myself, but I have watched use them on . Impressive. Equally good on cougars. Not so good on .

National dog of Turkey . Huge ; ferocious in a fight, brilliant in work and loyal in spirit . These dogs can be smarter than some of the people you meet every day . Spooky smart , as in how did that SOB get in here and what the hell do I do about it now- kind of smart .

Do you recognise this adorable young lady? You have undoubtedly seen hundreds, if not thousands, of photographs of her in later life. Test your internal software by aging her image to adulthood.

Hint: the original caption reads, as edited by me, "[snip], daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John V. [snip] III, with Great Dane at the annual dog show of the Long Island Kennel Club, Seawani Club, Hewlett Harbor, Long Island, NY, 1935."

The photograph is from Bert Morgan, Dog Shows (2000).
