If you can't beat 'em, join 'em, Endo. The problem is that it's becoming more and more difficult to penetrate these circles and the article illustrates why.
As for me personally, I made the very stupid decision of entering a PhD program in engineering. Although I will be completely debt free when I leave, it's clear that lacking the elite pedigree, and having fallen into a project with little academic merit, the degree will be worthless. Engineering jobs are increasingly mundane dead ends, as far as I'm concerned. I've sunk 4.5 years into this (including an MS along the way) and am looking for a way to get out and switch career tracks.
Oddly, it seems that finance and management will remain the place for talented people here.
