Never criticize anyone until you've walked several kilometres in their shoes.
Because

1. You're now several kilometres away; and

2. You've got their shoes.

big thanks to Nonc for mentioning the RAW file trickery - been mucking around with it and ill never shoot non raw again.

besides the HDR, which has been most fun, Im quite prone to forgetting all the bloody colour model/white balance/iso settings and with the RAW files you dont need to because you can do that during processing.

My pictures are looking so much better!

havent fully reverse engineered the tonemapping algorithms yet - but one thing Im noticing when it comes to making "realistic" images is that splitting them into HSL and then playing games with the Saturation and Lighting is getting me better results than HDR on single image pictures with dark and light patches.

I do like the cartoony look of the HDR tonemapping, but not always.

I recently created a shot like this for a friend's short film I'm working on: http://vimeo.com/15071461

It's a "Dry for Wet" shot. You may have heard of "Day for Night," where you shoot during the day and manipulate it to look like night time. This is a way to fake an underwater shot. The Dryer lint is the funniest ingredient in this, but it works wonders.

No I haven't, but I am interested. I'd love to know more. Filters on the CCD's? Are you putting colored filters right over the sensor?

There's a lot of latitude in those images. I'd love to do the modifications with an HD video DSLR. Maybe in a couple years when the current crop of cameras have gotten old.

Inspiring work, thank you for this.

In regards, math and art: I think an artist has to make some early decisions regarding the precision of a work of art. Either an artist is going to make a piece mathematically correct or purposely not in a stylized way. The two can be mixed, but there have to be some ground rules for how that works.

For instance, if I was to try to combine three photographs from three different places, I'd need to make note of the lens being used, all of the settings on the camera, the precise angle and measure the distances from the subject if I hoped to achieve something that the eye would see as natural. It's funny that to most people math doesn't come naturally, but if they see a work of art that has a line in the wrong place mathematically, they spot it. It loses its realism. Maybe that's the genius of artists that can make you see mathematically "correct" images that couldn't exist, like Escher.

just found a very cute artistic toy that allows the variable focusing point tricks of the tilt-shift gear, but costs $300 instead of $2500

http://lensbaby.com" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

fits canon, nikon and many video cameras, also has a pluggable optics system which lets you swap between different toy lenses giving various in camera effects, and has macro and wide angle converters.

looks like alot of creative fun for very little money.

http://www.fastcompany.com/1769198/flas ... for-androp

250 cameras (canon 60D's like my new one!) with big flash units being triggered by the open source progammable circuit boad tech to created a high intensity strobing LED wall.

a creative and financially insane way to make funky party lights..
