The local concept of beauty is not so odd historically given that thinness was traditionally associated with a lack of food.

What is very distressing is that it is enforced under duress against the woman's will unlike, say, certain other countries where obesity is more or less voluntary.

This raises an interesting question: why do cultures cling so strongly to stupid practices that do not appear to confer any absolute or relative advantage?

Do cultures like to admit that they've been wrong for a long time? Does that stupid woman with a stick want to be unemployed?
