No idea, whether it be religious, legal, philosophical, practical, revolutionary, or even base, has or ever will get off the ground without someone to sell it. The fundamental edifice on which all human endeavor is built is sales.

And most good salesmen will tell you that Fear and Greed are the best friends they have.

i tend to agree for some people, but with a caveat around cooperation and love and other motivators aswell, which is why i was surprised to see such a "dry" perspective.
i would also add that the salespitch quite often strikes me as a need for validation, more than an offer of something useful.

i actually tried to be a salesman for a few months when i last got sick of programming.
was a bit of a disaster, i felt bad selling the stock we had over the stock i thought the customer wanted, and didnt ever find a comfortable perception of what i was doing without fearing i was making myself nastier, which isnt a quality i need more of.

the above is a nice summary of my perception of it, thanks CD.
with the obvious quibble we dont always have that many options around us, nor the means to create options ... and still need to pay the mortgage and feed the family .. which tends to add a touch more perspective to the "stock you have" than your summary does.

Customers knowing about a salesman's problems is a death knell for a salesman...

CD and then you have selling your programming, something i do all the time, and i think you do aswell.
this is a completely different kettle of fish than product sales, selling someone a hammer doesnt tend to lead to complaints it doesnt fly to japan automatically whilst doing the dishes. *twitch*
selling bespoke software is all about expectation management, and that is a very complex mix of listening and educating.
no surprises im crap at it and tend to need someone with more social skills than myself, im always going to far in one direction or the other and backpeddling.
"shut up and pay attention" is a rule for everything in life, not just sales
