Anxiety

Postby Hans Bulvai » Mon Dec 19, 2011 11:43 pm

So I just got an offer to work for a different company and a whole new industry.
I have been at my current position for over 7 years and am pretty stable and well nested.
Problem is the powers that be like me where I am at and do not want me to change. I get the job done if you will.
So when the company went through some changes a few months ago and people got laid off or encouraged to leave, I got a very small raise to keep me.
Problem is advancement is not likely and I am no longer being challenged en par with my technical abilities.

The new position is with an Energy company that will pay better and will give me ample opportunity to advance. The position is with the R&D group that had a $20 million budget this year. Twice as much as my current emplyers profits for the year.... And Houston is an Energy city. The new position will allow me to develop skills that can be very marketable for the future...

I just now got the offer and I haven't had butterflies like this since....can't remember when really...

Anxiety is high....

I need to go work out to get the idea through my system....

Is it normal to feel lik this? This would be my first career change since my professional career started.....

Now I have a week to decide....
Now I'm far from home
Spending time alone
It's time to set my demons free
Been put to the test
My mind laid to rest
I'm on a psycho holiday

The opportunity sounds great, but a week isn’t even enough time to work out the employment contract.

Sounds like they are trying to rush you, which isn't good.
10 years ago the USA had Steve Jobs, Bob Hope, and Johnny Cash. Now we have no Jobs, no Hope, and no Cash.

Thank you for the feedback Nonc.

I knew the details weeks in advance but had just received the offer letter this week.
I asked for a week extension and they were fine with it.
They are in a rush becase of the volume of projects that they just recieved and I am one of two people that they want to hire from an applicant base of around 50...

The market is very competitive here in the energy industry and since I lack any experience in it, the compensation and opportunity for training are excellent.

And really, there is no contract. Texas is a right to work state so I can be hired and fired at will.

This is where the anxiety comes in. I am leaving a nested position to one that is unknown. But it will be very good for me and my family. And from a technical standpoint, I will be in nerd heaven... All the technology I can handle! :geek:

For what it's worth, Hans, I wouldn't hesitate a New York second . . go for it.

I've always figured there are two, mutually-exclusive polarities in life: freedom and security . . security, while comforting, can be stifling. Freedom, while uncertain, can be exhilarating.

Be all you can be.

I say go for it. But I'm the type of person that will make life-changing choices within seconds of being presented with an idea.
The canary didn't die because this mine is dangerous, it died because it's lazy and wasn't raised with a proper work ethic.

.

Look Hans

all depends

how old are you ? wife and how many (young) children ? how much fix cost have you (mortgage etc) and things of that sort

IMVHO, if you young, married with small children (less costly) , technical & eager to learn, team player but professional

if so

that is the time each man (and woman) must risk for a better life

if so, do not think a second, take the offer (of course nail them down as good as you can)

Look Hans

my son too had butterfly in stomach each time when changing job

but , each time, looking back, he saw what an advancement of his carrier it was

relaaax, step back, study the fine print .. and go for it and don't look back

I don't know which one you chose but I have to say that I always enjoyed being a big fish in a small pond then a little fish in a big pond. Some opportunities are really worth leaving the comfort and stability of a small company, but there aren't many.
I can never think of anything witty to put into a signature.
