The recent set of tornados in "Tornado Alley" is one of the most severe in decades with 328 deaths reported to-date.

It rained this morning - for the first time for over a month, and then only lightly for an hour or so. Damp drizzly Britain does get forest fires occasionally, but never in spring, like this one in Scotland:



Strong north winds have fanned the blazes, after the hottest April on record.

While Americans freeze, drown or get twistered away, NW Europe is shaping up for the worst drought since 1976, and maybe since 1911. In southern England there were some thunderstorms last Thursday, but otherwise no significant rain for nearly three months, and the wheat crop is lost. To quote from an otherwise unmemorable film set in southern California, today is another f***ing sunny day. The real worry is crops in nothern France, the breadbasket of Europe and a big exporter.


. Last year it was Russia and eastern Europe, in 2008 the Med - this year these areas are well watered, as the Atlantic depressions go either north or south of a blocking high pressure stuck over Denmark.

waterspouts are kinda cool - get alot of them in cyclone season up in tropical waters.

unlike the land based ones, they are usually harmless - you have plenty of oppurtunity to avoid them, so its just the spectacle of watching the big snake come out of the clouds

finally got rain in my place, first time ive seen it in years .. literally :/

even if it rains well all winter the land is so dry they are predicting no run off into the dams, so next summer is going to be interesting... recycled sewerage is on the cards.
