Dancing

I have always liked contemporary dancing very much (and my wife is a ballet teacher, which helps...) and today I saw on television a most extraordinary choreography by Jiri Kylian (a Czech choreographer), called Sleepless, danced by those very talented dancers of the Nederlands Dans Theater. I can't resist offering you a glimpse...

For those wanting to download it, try this:

In my next life, should I be asked , I want to be one of those wiry Bohemian types that can dance like that. Instead of being someone that looks like he ate someone like that.

Thanks , I like this.

I went tonight to see a most extraordinary ballet. Just a little bit to show how it was:

If you ever have a chance to see it, don't miss it.

The "Candle Dance" of the Thai Kheun tribe from Chiang Rai province in our far north border country of Myanmar and Laos.

The candle dance is performed as an invitation to the guardians of the eight directions to pass through the candlelight to honour the Buddha.

So, DoU, is this the real deal or a load of artistic bollocks?

DoU Great explanation. There is a primal movement you rarely see anymore, particularly in dance.

(Robam Tep Apsara)

The Khmer Dance of the Apsaras, the female spirits of clouds and waters, whose dance was created by their husbands, the servants of Indra, the god who directs war, storms, and the rains.

This dance style seems simple and effortless, but it is harder than it appears. Trust me, I have tried. Everything from foot and hand movements to facial expressions and postures have to be perfect. Keeping that Chada (headdress) properly balanced is not easy either...

The Khmer dance of the Mermaid & Hanuman. (For those here who have minimal familiarity with Hindu mythology, Hanuman is an incarnation of the divine, or as Lord Shiva incarnated as a monkey. Hanuman is one of the dearest devotees of lord Rama, and is a central figure in the Ramayana. This story is a Khmer version and variation of part of that myth).

The story goes that Sovan Macha is the daughter of Krong Reap who is an evil king (aka the Demon Ravana), but Sovan Macha is also queen of the mermaids. She disrupted the rocks Hanuman placed in the sea to make a bridge to cross to Sri Lanka or to the island of Langkawi to rescue Sita (daughter of Bhumi Devi, the goddess of the Earth) or Neang Seda depending upon the version of the story you hear.

Hanuman becomes very angry about Sovan Macha’s interference and jumps into the ocean to find her. He is than mesmerized by her. They fall in love, and with their union comes a baby. Their baby is Machanu, half monkey and half mermaid, a concord of earth and water. Hanuman's army and Sovan Macha's mermaids then work together to complete the bridge to rescue and bring Neang Seda (Sita) into their family. Their love inspires the harmony of the queens of the oceans, the earth, and the gods.
