Anyone ever hike the AT? Section? All the way through? I'm in very early planning stages and would love to hear of other's experiences.

Envious. It is my goal to hike this with my oldster before she leaves the house ( still have a while yet ). Would love to hear how your trip goes.

I have done the Appalachian trail
(pauses for effect)
Well, about five miles of it on the Connecticut/NY border, with my son. Even then, we got lost, and all I can remember is a awful lot of trees.
Have you read Bill Bryson's "" ?
Are you planning a stage, and if so where? The whole thing is awfully long, and few complete it. Also what time of year, it must be awesome in spring and autumn, fearsome in summer and nigh impossible in winter.
Good luck.

I'm taking a stab at a section hike as a proving ground, having only done day hikes of ~20 miles that were luxurious compared to the real deal. I've not decided where to start, or if I'd be north or south bound. I'm reading about black bears, boots and high performance clothing at the moment.
The ethos of trail angels on the AT is a remarkable thing, btw - something that ought to get more attention. It seems something more attuned to nomadic cultures than urban ones.
