If I were to write for or design a video game, I would want to work on an augmented reality game.
Although I think playgrounds will start getting over run with adults using this technology, I can certainly imagine the types of story telling that could take place.
Iphones have apps using this kind of technology and the new Nintendo 3DS is going to have it.

A friend of mine Matt Mason who wrote "The Pirate's Dilemma" is working on a script about just that. It's coming around the pike very soon.

The sheer amount of money necessary to create a mass media console game, or to interest one of the big game developers is insane: as a rule, they don't license a game unless you have 100 Million of profit under your belt.
What little bandwidth they do give to original development goes pretty exclusively to in-house creators. Similarly, there just aren't that many independent game development houses who have the capacity to put together major releases.
Because of the big hurdle to game development. Augmented reality is a huge boon for creators who don't already have proven success on that level.. I end up speaking to a lot of people who dream of having a console game of their screenplay/novel/comic book what have you, but when I ask them what intermediate level games (casual gaming, Alternate or Augmented Reality Games... out of the Xbox ideas) they're usually drawing blanks.
In my opinion, the more people think of ways to involve the people around them in games, and provide reasonably creative, attainable gaming concepts the stronger their properties will become. The more immersive their universe, the more likely it will be that they will get to the threshold where a major company will develop with them. But meanwhile, an iphone app and talking to Nerf or Poof-Slinky is way more realistic than taking a screenplay to EA.

.
A new augmented reality program recreates the Berlin Wall and provides renderings of the Cold War structure at the exact site where it used to exist using GPS coordinates. The application is just one of many demonstrating the consumer application of technologies that, only a few years ago, were still the exclusive domain of science fiction novels.

Hecate That is the field my wife works in. It's called, "Transmedia", where you look at the brand from a narrative standpoint and figure out attainable goals to expand the franchise.
