Johannes Brahms wrote to Clara Schumann about the Chaconne from Partita 2 BWV 1004, "on one stave, for a small instrument, the man writes a whole world of the deepest thoughts and most powerful feelings. If I imagined that I could have created, even conceived the piece, I am quite certain that the excess of excitement and earth-shattering experience would have driven me out of my mind..."
For some time now, I have fancied starting my work day in my home office listening to Bach's sonatas and partitas for solo violin. For me, I find that the Chaconne, sometimes more than the other great works, focuses and balances my mind and heart rather while voiding all the internal distractions that could make my morning less than productive.
In any case, Hilary Hahn's performance of the Chaconne from Partita 2 more than speaks for itself:
