There is great pride in being insubordinate and breaking the law, especially in being successful at it. "Beating the system" is big for those the system has stacked against. Now, it is not just a black phenomenon, but many black kids are born into terrible situations where one is exposed to real crime before hitting age ten. At age ten, I was playing baseball and spending summers after baseball at the Jersey Shore, without a care in the world. It is hard to argue for hip hop as superior music, but it is cultural and understandable for one to embrace in our unofficial caste system.
