The communion of saints [using the term as vaguely as possible so as to incorporate the institutional, radical, creedal and confessional] is what is essential to Christianity.
Christianity is the intimate mimesis of Jesus, the first figure to expose the true violence of society, as practiced and interpreted through the generations. Those saints who bare good fruit with be imitated and expounded upon until Kingdom Come...or so goes the idea.
Everything else is supplemental commentary.
